All-mountain skis are for those who love to ski all over the mountain! Versatile skis capable of doing most things. They are a bit wider than piste skis to provide float in powder. They also perform well on the piste, and are great in slightly churned-up pistes, where they help you float on top rather than getting stuck.
All-mountain skis for different types of skiing
Not everyone wants to have two different skis, one for piste and one for off-piste/freeride. Perhaps you mostly ski on the piste, but sometimes like to take a turn off-piste? Then a ski in the all-mountain segment is suitable; here you get a ski that actually works for most things. This segment has grown in recent years, and many all-mountain skis have really good piste characteristics.

All-mountain is a very broad category of skis, and it's not always easy to draw sharp lines between piste and off-piste models. It simply spans a fairly large range of skis, and thus suits a great many skiers.
Choose the right dimensions for your all-mountain skis
So, what waist width should you choose? It depends a bit on what you want to get out of the ski. Do you mostly like piste? But do you still like to take a turn off-piste sometimes? Then you might want to choose a ski that isn't too wide underfoot. If off-piste skiing is the primary focus, a ski with a slightly wider waist is preferable.
These skis, as mentioned, are suitable for the whole mountain; a slightly narrower ski becomes more piste-oriented, and a slightly wider ski leans more towards off-piste. A characteristic often appreciated in these skis is that they work really well in mogul fields and in slushy spring skiing.
The right size for your all-mountain ski
The waist, which is the narrowest part of the ski, gives a general idea of the ski. In all-mountain skis, the waist can be said to be between 90-110 mm, where skis closer to 90 mm have more piste characteristics, while those with a slightly wider waist provide additional float in powder snow.
Ski dimensions are often given with three points, for example, 122 -95 -114. The first measurement, 122, indicates the width at the widest point at the top, the nose/tip. The second measurement, 95, is the waist of the ski, and the last measurement, 114, indicates the measurement at the tail.
Important considerations
It's also worth considering where you'll be skiing. Will you mostly be skiing in Scandinavia, where we usually have less snow and denser forests, or is it the Alps, where there's often more snow and larger areas? Therefore, you might prefer to choose a slightly narrower and more easily turnable ski for Scandinavian conditions. Whereas a ski with a slightly wider waist is preferable in the Alps.
