All-mountain skis - for the entire mountain, in all conditions

All-mountain skis are for those who want a ski that can handle everything. They are built for skiers who don't want to be limited to one type of terrain, but want to enjoy groomed slopes, packed snow, and untouched powder.

Unlike traditional piste skis, all-mountain skis have a slightly wider waist and a construction that makes them more adaptable. You get a ski that feels stable at high speeds, while still being playful and working equally well on groomed slopes as when you venture off-piste.

All-mountain skis have become one of the most popular choices among both recreational and experienced skiers, precisely because they offer the freedom to ski everywhere with one pair of skis.

What are all-mountain skis?

All-mountain skis are developed to perform in all types of terrain and snow conditions. They combine characteristics from piste skis and freeride skis, making them a very flexible option.

They are usually wider than piste skis, which provides better float in soft snow, but narrower than dedicated off-piste skis, which means they still have good edge grip on groomed slopes.

This makes them a perfect choice for skiers who want a ski that performs equally well throughout the ski day, from freshly groomed mornings to packed afternoon snow.

Who are all-mountain skis suitable for?

All-mountain skis are suitable for beginners, intermediate, and advanced skiers. Many who previously owned both piste and off-piste skis now choose an all-mountain ski because it offers so much flexibility. For those who primarily ski on groomed slopes but want to be able to venture off-piste sometimes, this is the perfect compromise.

They are particularly popular among those who:

Primarily ski on groomed slopes but want to be able to go off-piste occasionally
Want a versatile ski for varying conditions
Ski in both Sweden and the Alps
Want a ski that performs well in both hard and soft snow

Since all-mountain skis come in many different constructions and widths, there are models to suit all levels and skiing styles. You can read more about this in our ski buying guide, where we explain how to find the right model for your skiing style.

All-mountain skis for women, men, and juniors

All-mountain skis are available in models for women, men, and juniors, with constructions adapted to different body sizes, weights, and skiing styles. The differences primarily concern length, flex, and construction, not skill level.

Women's models are often slightly lighter and available in shorter lengths, making them well-balanced and easier to handle. Men's models are generally available in longer lengths and a wider range of stiffness.

All-mountain skis for juniors are developed to be easy to ski, stable, and help younger skiers develop in varied terrain.

Regardless of whether you choose women's, men's, or junior all-mountain skis, the most important thing is to choose the right length, width, and construction based on your skill level and how you ski.

How long should all-mountain skis be?

Generally, a good choice is somewhere just below your own height to slightly longer than yourself. The length of an all-mountain ski depends on your weight, skiing style, type of ski, and, for example, how much rocker the ski has.

Guidelines based on skill level and skiing style:

Beginner:
Choose a ski that is a few centimeters shorter than your body height. This makes the skis easier to control and turn.

Intermediate to advanced:
A length around your body height works for most. Some also choose a few centimeters longer for increased stability, depending on the model and preference.

More off-piste focused skiing:
A length near or slightly above your body height provides better float and stability in loose snow.

More piste focused skiing:
A slightly shorter ski provides faster turns and better control on hard snow.

Other factors to consider:

Many modern all-mountain skis have rocker in the tip and tail, meaning they are upturned, which makes them feel easier to turn. Therefore, you can often choose a slightly longer ski without it becoming difficult to handle.

If you prefer playful and quick skiing, a shorter length might be more suitable. For higher speeds and more varied terrain, a longer ski provides more confidence.

Heavier skiers often get better stability with a slightly longer ski, while lighter skiers may benefit more from a shorter model.

How wide should all-mountain skis be?

The waist width of all-mountain skis typically ranges between 85 and 105 mm.
The most important thing is to consider how much of your skiing takes place on-piste compared to off-piste.

Do you mostly ski on groomed slopes but want some extra versatility? Choose a ski with a narrower waist, around 85-95 mm and more camber.
Do you want a ski that can handle powder days and packed snow? Then a model with a wider waist, around 95-105 mm and more rocker in the tip, is a better choice. This provides better float in soft snow and works better off-piste.

Ski dimensions are often given as three numbers, for example, 130–96–118. The first number indicates the width of the tip, the second the waist, and the third the tail. A wider waist provides more float, while a narrower one provides better edge grip. It's about finding the balance that suits your skiing style and where you usually ski – in Sweden, the Alps, or further afield.
